The Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is one of the most popular and hardy livebearing fish in freshwater aquariums, highly valued by both beginners and experienced aquarists. This species is easily recognizable by its vibrant colors and unique physical feature – mature males develop a distinctive sword-like extension on the lower part of their caudal fin.

Swordtails are exceptionally active swimmers and require plenty of open swimming space. It is best to keep them in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. Because they are strong swimmers and notorious jumpers, a securely fitted aquarium lid is essential.
