Tiger Barb / California Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is an extremely active, lively, and popular schooling fish that adds dynamic movement and vibrant colors to any well-established aquarium. It is characterized by a compressed body with bold contrasting vertical stripes, with the "California" variety being highly sought after for its bright and decorative coloration.

These fish grow up to approximately 6-7 cm (2.5-3 inches) and thrive best in schools of at least 8-10 individuals. Keeping them in proper groups significantly reduces fin-nipping behavior.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Puntigrus tetrazona
  • Origin: Southeast Asia
  • Maximum Size: 6-7 cm
  • Minimum Tank Size: 80 liters (for a school)
  • Temperament: Active, energetic, can be a fin-nipper with slow tankmates
  • Water Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F)
  • pH Range: 6.0 - 7.5
  • Diet: Omnivorous (accepts flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods)

Compatibility and Care:

Tiger Barbs are not suitable for tanks with slow-moving or long-finned fish (such as Bettas, fancy Guppies, and Angelfish) because they tend to nip at their fins. They make great tankmates for other fast schooling fish like Danios, Tetras, or robust bottom-dwellers like Corydoras.
