Lysmata amboinensis – Cleaner Shrimp
The Lysmata amboinensis, commonly known as the Cleaner Shrimp or Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, is one of the most popular and beneficial marine invertebrates in the aquarium hobby. Featuring a striking red-and-white stripe pattern, it is not only a gorgeous addition to a reef tank but also plays a vital role in maintaining the health of your fish.
Key Features:
- Size: Up to 5-6 cm (2-2.5 inches).
- Temperament: Peaceful, social, and reef-safe.
- Diet: Omnivorous – readily accepts flake foods, frozen foods, and scavenges parasites and dead tissue from fish.
- Minimum Tank Size: 70 liters (approx. 18 gallons).
- Water Parameters: Salinity 1.020 - 1.025, temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1 - 8.4.
Benefits for the Marine Aquarium:
This shrimp is famous for setting up 'cleaning stations' where fish will actively line up to be serviced. The shrimp removes external parasites, dead skin, and debris, significantly improving the overall health and stress levels of your fish. They can be kept singly, in pairs, or in small groups, and generally coexist peacefully with most reef inhabitants, excluding large crustacean predators.
