Carnegiella strigata (Marbled Hatchetfish) is a fascinating and unique schooling fish that inhabits the upper levels of the water column. Its deeply compressed, hatchet-like body allows it to swim near the surface and even leap out of the water when startled.
Growing to a maximum size of about 3.5 cm (1.4 inches), it is perfect for community tanks and nano setups. Due to their excellent jumping ability, a tight-fitting aquarium lid is strictly required.
Key Features:
- Scientific Name: Carnegiella strigata
- Origin: South America (Amazon Basin)
- Max Size: ~3.5 cm
- Temperament: Peaceful, schooling
- Minimum Tank Size: 50 liters (prefers surface area over depth)
Care Guidelines:
Marbled hatchetfish thrive best in schools of 6 or more individuals. They appreciate dimmed lighting and floating plants that mimic their natural shaded habitat. Soft, slightly acidic water with good filtration is ideal.
Diet:
Carnegiella strigata readily accepts high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and small frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp. They feed almost exclusively from the water surface.
