• Sewellia lineolata

Sewellia lineolata, commonly known as the Reticulate Hillstream Loach or Butterfly Loach, is a fascinating and highly beneficial bottom-dwelling fish. Featuring a flattened body and modified pectoral and pelvic fins that act as natural suction cups, it easily clings to smooth surfaces even in fast-flowing waters.

This peaceful loach is an excellent algae consumer, constantly grazing on biofilm and microalgae covering rocks and aquarium glass. Growing to a maximum size of approximately 6.5 cm (2.5 inches), it is a peaceful addition to river-manifold or cold-water setups.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Sewellia lineolata
  • Maximum Size: up to 6.5 cm (2.5 inches)
  • Temperature Range: 20°C - 24°C (68°F - 75°F)
  • Water pH: 6.5 – 7.5
  • Temperament: Peaceful, somewhat territorial with conspecifics
  • Diet: Omnivore, feeds heavily on algae, biofilm, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables

Care Requirements:

To thrive, Sewellia lineolata requires a well-oxygenated aquarium with strong water flow provided by powerheads or heavy filtration. The tank setup should feature smooth river rocks, pebbles, and bright lighting to encourage natural algae growth. They do best when kept with small, peaceful tank mates that appreciate similar high-flow environments.
